This mulch sale is the main source of income for the DeWitt scouts.  It helps to fund national organization fees, the scouting award program, camping equipment needs, and outing/campout costs.

How does it work?

Basically, profits from the sales are split between the troop account and accounts set up for specific scouts.  The troop gets 40% of the profits and uses the monies earned to pay yearly registration costs, buy insurance coverage, purchase awards (such as merit badges), fund service projects, and provide camping equipment.  60% of the profits are placed into youth accounts for those earning the funds by either selling the mulch, working deliveries, or spreading mulch.  Youth account funds can be used by the scout for any scouting purpose: paying for campouts, summer camp, or bigger trips like the ones we have taken canoeing to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota, hiking at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, or to the National Scout Jamboree in Virginia.
